Tom Peterson is a conductor, composer, and countertenor currently finishing a DMA in Choral Conducting at the University of Arizona. He has served as Music Director at Christ Church of the Ascension (Episcopal) since 2013, and just completed a two-year appointment as Music Director of the Green Valley Community Chorus. An Arizona native, Tom earned a Bachelor of Music in Theory & Composition from Arizona State University and a Master of Music in Composition and Conducting from the Royal College of Music in London. He then spent four years on the faculty of Phoenix College, where he taught music theory, ear training, and music history. When he’s not behind a keyboard or a music stand, he loves to get outside and hike with his wife, Teriann, and their dog, Roxie.
“I am thrilled and humbled by the opportunity to join this wonderful group. I think the season we are putting together is really special — it will be announced soon — and I’m looking forward to getting started! I love working with community ensembles because everyone wants to be there; everyone is in it for the love of the musical experience. So I see the role of the conductor as a guide, not an authoritarian. My goal is to foster a team dynamic, a mutual understanding of — and commitment to — the music that focuses our energies into a result greater than the sum of its parts.”
